SC decides admission to St Stephens Hospital College for Nursing cannot be extended indefinitely

The Supreme Court ruled on Saturday that the admissions process at educational institutions cannot be infinite, while denying a request for an additional mop-up round to fill seats in nursing programmes in Delhi for the academic year 2021-22.

“The admissions procedure at educational institutions cannot be infinite. It must come to an end at some point in time. Any extension and/or deviation from the time schedule will have an impact on the education “declared a vacation bench consisting of Justices MR Shah and Aniruddha Bose.

The panel dismissed the plea filed by St Stephens Hospital College of Nursing and another petitioner Angela Biju, which sought a directive to initiate the admission process for the nursing courses of batch 2021-22 on the grounds that almost 110 seats remained unfilled in Delhi nursing institutes.
The petitioners were asking for a time extension and an additional mop-up round to replace empty nursing slots.

However, the bench refused to order the Centre and the Indian Nursing Council to hold another mop-up round to fill nursing seats in Delhi for the current academic year.

“We see no basis to interfere with the challenged High Court decision and order(s).”

“As a result, both the Special Leave Petition and the Writ Petition are rejected,” the bench concluded in its ruling.

Admission was to be expired in March

The admission procedure for nursing programmes in Delhi for the academic year 2021-22 was set to expire on March 31, 2022.

According to the appeal, the timetable for two government nursing institutions was extended from March 31 to May 15, and the same respite might be offered to St Stephens Hospital College of Nursing.
