Silent Threat in the Heat: Recognizing the Signs of a Hidden Heart Attack During a Heatwave

During a severe heatwave, our hearts can be under immense stress as they work extra hard to regulate our body temperature. Proper hydration, a balanced diet, and keeping our bodies cool are key to maintaining cardiovascular health. However, half of heart attacks are silent, meaning their signs can be missed, increasing the risk of mortality. Women and diabetics are at an increased risk of silent heart attacks, which may present with symptoms like fatigue, heartburn, indigestion, and gastric influx, rather than the typical chest pain and shortness of breath.

Harvard University notes that almost 45% of heart attacks are silent, leading people to ignore them and not seek medical attention. Signs of a silent heart attack can include a strained muscle in the chest or upper back and excessive fatigue.

Extreme heat can significantly affect heart function. The body works best within specific temperature ranges, and extreme heat can disrupt metabolism, affecting various organs, including the heart. Heatwaves lead to increased sweating and fluid loss, which can result in dehydration. The heart then needs to work harder to maintain circulation, increasing the strain, especially in those with underlying conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Patients on certain medications like diuretics may also experience fatigue and dehydration in summer, requiring dose adjustments.

Dr. Sashi K Srivastav, a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad, advises people with heart issues to avoid heavy exercise in summer, stay hydrated, and stay indoors. He highlights common causes of silent heart attacks in hot weather, including intense physical activity and exposure to extreme heat, which can activate the sympathetic system and increase the risk of a heart attack.

Dr. V. Rajasekhar, a Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad, emphasizes the importance of recognizing warning signs of a silent heart attack in hot weather. Excessive sweating, fatigue, shortness of breath, and dizziness can all be indicators. These symptoms, especially when occurring together, should not be ignored, as they could signal a silent heart attack. It’s crucial to seek medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms, as a silent heart attack can be just as dangerous as a traditional one.

In conclusion, being aware of the warning signs of a silent heart attack during a heatwave and taking appropriate precautions can help protect your heart health. Listening to your body, staying hydrated, and seeking medical attention if you experience any concerning symptoms can make a significant difference in your overall well-being.
