Silent Signs of Danger: How Swelling in Your Fingers Can Signal Kidney, Liver, or Heart Trouble

Spotting signs and symptoms of diseases is crucial for early detection and treatment. While some signs are well-known, others may not seem alarming at first glance but could indicate serious underlying health conditions. One such sign, highlighted by Abbas Kanani, superintendent pharmacist for Chemist Click, is swelling in the fingers, wrists, and hands, known as oedema. This seemingly innocuous symptom can actually indicate three deadly health conditions if ignored or misdiagnosed.

Kidney Disease

Kanani emphasizes that kidneys play a vital role in maintaining fluid balance and eliminating waste products from the body. When dealing with chronic kidney disease or acute kidney injury, kidney function weakens, leading to fluid retention and oedema. Apart from swelling in the fingers, other signs of kidney disease include decreased urine production, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and blood in the urine.

Liver Disease

Liver disease can cause a decrease in the production of proteins that help maintain fluid balance in the blood. As a result, fluid may leak into the tissues, causing oedema, especially in the abdomen and legs. Other signs of liver disease include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), easy bruising or bleeding, abdominal pain and swelling, itching on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, dark urine, and pale stools.

Heart Failure

Fluid buildup in the lungs and other tissues can occur when the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, leading to heart failure. In addition to swelling in the fingers, wrists, and hands, other signs of heart failure include shortness of breath, persistent cough, rapid or irregular heartbeat, fatigue, and weakness.

Seeking Medical Help

Kanani advises seeking immediate medical help if you suspect liver or kidney failure or experience persistent or worsening symptoms of heart failure. Consulting a GP for proper diagnosis and treatment is crucial in managing these conditions effectively.

In conclusion, recognizing subtle signs such as swelling in the fingers, wrists, and hands can help detect serious health conditions early. It is essential not to overlook or dismiss such signs, as they could be indicative of underlying health issues that require prompt medical attention.
