Kidney stones have become increasingly common, affecting millions of people worldwide. But what exactly are kidney stones, why do they form, and how can they be prevented? This video will answer all your questions in easy and simple language.

Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. These stones develop when your urine contains more crystal-forming substances, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, than the fluid in your urine can dilute. At the same time, your urine may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney stones to form.

Several factors contribute to the formation of kidney stones. Dehydration is a major cause; when you don’t drink enough water, your urine becomes concentrated with minerals and salts, increasing the risk of stone formation. Diet also plays a crucial role. Consuming high amounts of salt, sugar, and protein can increase the risk of certain types of stones. Additionally, medical conditions such as urinary tract infections, obesity, digestive diseases, and certain metabolic disorders can elevate the risk.

To prevent kidney stones, it’s important to stay well-hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps dilute the substances in your urine that lead to stones. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Adjusting your diet can also help. Reducing salt intake, limiting animal protein, and avoiding foods high in oxalates, like spinach, beets, and nuts, can be beneficial. Including foods rich in calcium but not overconsuming them, as dietary calcium binds with oxalate in the intestines, reducing the amount of oxalate that gets absorbed into the bloodstream and transferred to the kidneys.

Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are also key preventive measures. If you have a history of kidney stones, your doctor might recommend certain medications to help prevent new stones from forming.
