A new study conducted by UTHealth Houston researchers revealed that taking mushroom extract on a regular basis aids the immune system in eradicating human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.
The study’s findings were published in the journal ‘Frontiers in Oncology.’ The National Institutes of Health funded the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase II trial.
“Our findings suggest that AHCC® supplementation may help most patients remove their HPV infection and may reduce the long-term risk of HPV-related malignancies,” said Judith A. Smith, PharmD, principal researcher on the study and professor at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
“Our research has proved that the AHCC supplement is safe through this study and several other trials.”
AHCC (active hexose correlated compound) is a mushroom extract that is proprietary.
The study only included women who had a two-year history of persistent high-risk HPV. Patients in the treatment group were given the AHCC supplement for six months, followed by a placebo for six months. For 12 months, patients in the placebo group were given a placebo.
The study discovered that 14 of 22 individuals in the therapy arm (63.6 percent) were HPV-negative.

In the United States, HPV is the most frequent sexually transmitted virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 43 million HPV infections occurred in 2018, with the majority occurring in adults in their late teens and early twenties.
HPV infections can lead to a variety of health issues, including genital warts and cancer. HPV vaccinations, on the other hand, can assist to eliminate infection and negative effects.
“Alternative than cautious waiting, we have no other effective therapy for chronic HPV infections. While AHCC supplementation may not be beneficial for everyone, it is now widely available for patients to consult their physicians about taking it to assist their immune system clear chronic HPV infections “Smith stated.
