Eye health: 8 essential tips to take care of your eyes while TRAVELLING

When we prepare for a journey, we often meticulously create checklists covering all the essentials. However, one crucial aspect that is frequently overlooked is taking care of our eyes. Here are eight valuable tips to ensure that eye health remains a priority amid the excitement of exploring new destinations.

1. Sunglasses: A vital accessory
Safeguarding our eyes with sunglasses is as imperative as applying sunscreen to protect our skin. Invest in high-quality sunglasses that effectively block harmful UV rays from the sun.

2. Lubricating eye drops
Eye drops should be a travel essential. Avoid rinsing eyes with water, as this may disrupt the delicate balance of your tear film. Go for lubricating eye drops to keep your eyes refreshed and comfortable.

3. Stay hydrated
Amidst the hustle and bustle of travel, it is easy to forget about staying hydrated. This happens especially during summers. So, ensure you drink plenty of water. Set a reminder on your phone to help remember to stay adequately hydrated.

4. Practice hand hygiene
Maintaining clean hands is a simple yet effective way to prevent germs from entering your eyes inadvertently. Regularly wash your hands with soap and water to reduce the risk of eye infections.

5. Avoid eye rubbing
Resist the urge to rub your eyes, no matter how tempting it may be when irritation strikes. Excessive eye rubbing can lead to burst blood vessels, resulting in bloodshot or red eyes.

6. Address eye injuries promptly
If you experience an eye injury, especially during sports or outdoor activities, seek immediate medical attention. Do not delay treatment until you return home. In case of foreign objects entering in the eye, rinsing with water can help, but sharp objects like glass may require urgent medical assistance.

7. Carry allergy medications
Traveling to dusty or allergen-prone areas can trigger allergic reactions. While sunglasses offer some protection against allergens, they can still enter your body through your mouth and nose. Keep antihistamines handy to mitigate potential allergy discomfort.

8. Prioritize adequate sleep
While on vacation, it is natural to make the most of your time. However, to truly enjoy your holiday, remember to prioritize rest. Aim for 6-8 hours of quality sleep each night as inadequate sleep can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.
