The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported a second case of Ebola in the country’s northwest after announcing a new Ebola epidemic over the weekend, according to the World Health Organization on Tuesday (WHO).
On April 25, health officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo verified the second Ebola case in Mbandaka. The 25-year-old lady, who is now deceased, began having symptoms 12 days before her death. The second case was the sister-in-law of the first patient, who also died, according to the WHO regional office for Africa. On April 23, the DRC proclaimed the 14th Ebola epidemic after one confirmed case was reported in Mbandaka, a city in the DRC’s Equateur Province.
The patient, a 31-year-old man, began suffering symptoms on April 5 and sought treatment at a local health institution after more than a week of care at home. The patient was admitted to an Ebola treatment centre for critical care on April 21, but died later that day.
According to the WHO, health officials are actively monitoring anybody who had contact with the two dead patients.
Since 1976, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has seen 14 Ebola outbreaks. The current epidemic is the sixth in as many years, making it the most common in the country’s Ebola history.
