WHO reports discovery of new Covid Omicron subvariant in India

According to World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a novel sub-variant BA.2.75 of the Omicron form of COVID-19 has been found in several countries, including India.

Ghebreyesus stated that the international body was monitoring the situation. “Globally reported cases of COVID-19 have surged by about 30% in the last two weeks. In the recent week, cases increased in four of the six WHO sub-regions “Ghebreyesus stated this during a news conference on Wednesday.

“BA.4 and BA.5 are creating waves in Europe and America. A new sub-lineage of BA.2.75 has also been discovered in countries such as India, which we are monitoring “WHO Director-General stated.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India recorded 16,159 new COVID cases in the previous 24 hours on Wednesday.

According to the Health Ministry, 15,394 COVID patients recovered over the time, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country since the start of the epidemic to 4,29,07,327. The current recovery rate is 98.53 percent.

During yesterday’s briefing, WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan stated that a sub-variant known as the BA.2.75 had emerged. “First from India, then from around ten other nations,” she explained.

“There are currently just a few sequences of the sub-variant to analyse, but it appears to have a few mutations in the spike protein’s receptor-binding domain. Obviously, that is a critical component of the virus that binds itself to the human receptor. So we’ll have to keep an eye on it. It is currently too early to tell if this sub-variant has extra immune evasion capabilities or is more clinically severe. We have no idea, “According to the Chief Scientist.

“So we’ll have to wait and see,” she added, adding that the World Health Organization is keeping an eye on it and that its Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) is continually reviewing data from throughout the world.

COVID-19 Incident Manager, WHO According to Abdi Mahamud, now is not the time to proclaim the epidemic finished.

“We’re still under the grip of the epidemic, and the virus still has a lot of power. So, whether it’s the BA.4 or the BA.5, or the BA.2.75, the infection will persist. It does its job well “He stated.

He also stated that people and communities should continue to wear masks, avoid crowds, and protect the most vulnerable and at-risk populations.
