BA.4 and BA.5 are global subvariants of the Omicron variant. These were originally detected in South Africa early this year and have now spread to numerous other nations. These variations have not been linked to increased illness severity or hospitalisation. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium verified the discovery of the first cases of BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, respectively (INSACOG)
