Chennai: Doctor mother and her newborn was saved through unique surgery

After a big tumour in her left kidney was discovered, a 27-year-old doctor and her infant were spared by a one-of-a-kind procedure conducted by the Apollo Proton Care Centre. The procedure consisted of an elective caesarean section and a robotic-assisted radical nephrectomy.

The doctor pre-operatively optimised foetal development in the uterus in order to plan surgery within one month after tumour diagnosis. The surgeons delivered the infant and the tumour through a single skin cut.

A multidisciplinary team of doctors from OBG (Obstetrics and Gynecology), Neonatology, Surgery, and Anesthesiology conducted the surgical surgery.

Under spinal anaesthesia, Dr Meera Ragavan, senior consultant in Uro-Gynaecology, performed an elective caesarean delivery under spinal anaesthesia, which was immediately followed by general anaesthesia for robotic left nephrectomy. According to a press statement, Dr. N Ragavan, senior consultant, urologist, and robotic surgeon at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, performed the tumour removal procedure.
