Antiseptic drug is as good as antibiotics for preventing recurrent UTI: Research

Current recommendations advocate daily low-dose antibiotics as the recommended preventative (prophylactic) therapy for recurring urinary tract infection (UTI). However, long-term antibiotic usage has been related to antibiotic resistance, necessitating urgent research into non-antibiotic alternatives. Methenamine hippurate is a bactericidal that sterilises urine and prevents the development of microorganisms. It has been proven in previous studies to be useful in avoiding UTIs, but the data is still equivocal, and further randomised trials are needed. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are a prevalent kind of urinary tract infection. It has the potential to harm the kidneys, bladder, and the tubes that connect them.

The information provided by this trial “might encourage patients and clinicians to consider methenamine hippurate as a first-line treatment for UTI prevention in women,” the researchers said.
