The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved the redevelopment of 79.73 hectares of land to allow for the expansion of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). As part of the renovation plan, hospital beds will be increased from 2,004 to 5,000 by 2024, with a total investment of Rs 9,053 crore.
Over the following seven years, fifty additional operating rooms and an infectious diseases unit will be erected. The master plan calls for the construction of almost 4,000 dormitory apartments to replace ageing structures, as well as a smart library and 1.5 lakh square metres of space for cutting-edge research laboratories, animal facilities, and a clinical trial facility.
According to a senior DDA official, the authority has approved the redevelopment plan for 79.73 hectares, which includes five land parcels owned by AIIMS, for the construction of a world-class medical university, as well as revising the use of 1.69 hectares of land for AIIMS from recreational to public and semi-public.
The project also involves an upgrade of the whole campus and its infrastructure to bring it up to pace with worldwide institutions, as well as the creation of a smart and sustainable campus that satisfies all healthcare, education, and research criteria.
The campus master plan will include a new hospital with 3,000 beds, new academic and research buildings for multiple graduate and postgraduate programmes, and new hostel blocks, he said.
The DDA has also accepted the request to designate the whole campus as a ‘Education & Research University’ in accordance with the Delhi Master Plan 2021, as well as to assign the campus unified development control rules.
The master plan, approved by the Union Cabinet on February 28, will connect the college’s disjointed campus, which covers 213.12 acres across five land parcels divided by Delhi’s Aurobindo Marg.
Addressing the crowd in Gorakhpur, PM Modi lauded the Yogi Adityanath government for taking up development projects in the state. ‘Beginning of a fertiliser plant & AIIMS in Gorakhpur is sending out several messages. When there is a double engine govt, then work takes place in double speed. When work is done with honest intentions, then even calamities can’t become obstacles,’ PM Modi said.
