Hidden Dangers of Non-Stick Cookware: How Teflon Can Harm Your Health

Non-stick cookware, made with Teflon, can release harmful chemicals when overheated, posing risks like infertility and heart problems. Cooking at lower temperatures and avoiding damaged pans can help minimize these health hazards.

Non-stick utensils are widely used in kitchens due to their convenience. These utensils contain synthetic polymers called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known as Teflon. While Teflon makes cooking and cleaning easier, it can pose health risks when used improperly. Cooking food on high flame in non-stick pans can cause Teflon to release harmful chemicals. These chemicals have been linked to serious health issues, including infertility and heart problems. The risk arises from the potential release of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical used in the manufacturing process of Teflon, which can become hazardous at high temperatures. To minimize risks, it is advisable to cook at lower temperatures and avoid using damaged or overheated non-stick cookware.
